What to Wear

What to Wear

Depending on your type of session, the wardrobe you will want to choose can vary. For a relaxed outdoor family session in an open field, neutral tones or even jewel tones may be best, while a little girl on her first birthday looks so very sweet in a fluffy pettiskirt. And of course, a newborn baby is best when they are in nothing at all (I love me some baby tush!).  Here are a couple of basic suggestions to follow when putting together the perfect ensemble for your perfect session:

Newborns:

  • best in the nude
  • wrapped in one of my newborn wraps
  • if in a diaper, use a neutral-colored diaper-cover
  • we will choose from the headbands and/or hats provided at the studio, or you are welcome to bring your own
  • for mom~ a simple white/black/gray tank top or tube top or short sleeve shirt, along with yoga pants, jeans, or simple skirt (some maxi-dresses or sheaths can work nicely as well)
  • for dad~ a simple white/black/gray tank or short sleeve shirt, along with jeans or khakis (some dads choose to do their father & baby shots bare-chested: please decide in advance)
  • for siblings~ a simple white/gray/cream short-sleeve shirt along with jeans or khakis. for girls, a simple sheath/shift or shirt and skirt (light-colored) works nicely

Children:

  • vintage and classic is often the best look
  • try for bare feet (make sure feet are clean) or simple shoes (example: mary janes or oxfords)
  • for a contemporary look, stay away from shirts that feature logos, characters, or busy patterns
  • details work nicely: look for ruffles, lace, decorative trim
  • headbands, flowers, feathers, newsboy caps, and such
  • tutus and pettiskirts are wonderful for little girls
  • overalls or vests are wonderful for little boys

Families:

  • try to compliment instead of coordinate (i.e.- matching outfits don’t work)
  • try not to do all-white or all-black, instead introduce other slashes of colors or patterns
  • skirts/dresses work well for the girls and moms
  • most often, shirts should be untucked for the guys
  • accessorize! scarves, hats, headbands and such can make an image

Maternity:

  • for a studio-style session: simple black tank top (or I provide a tube top) and black yoga pants or a favorite dress or top + jeans
  • for an outdoor session: jewel tone tops, twirly dresses, patterned tops, maxi-dresses
  • this is one of those times you want to show off your beautiful belly!
